Sir John Vanbrugh - Vanburgh Castle

Inscription

Sir John Vanbrugh, architect and dramatist, designed this house and lived here, c.1719-26.

Site: Sir John Vanbrugh - Vanburgh Castle (1 memorial)

SE10, Maze Hill, 121, Vanbrugh Castle

The house behind is Vanburgh Castle which he built for himself while Surveyor to the nearby Royal Naval Hospital in Greenwich. He lived here 1719-26. Said to be modelled on the French Bastille (which we can sort of see), where Vanbrugh was imprisoned, 1690-92, on charges of spying for the British.

2022: Londonist is also unimpressed with the Bastille likeness.
